Huskies Battle Florida and Oregon in Cross Coast Lacrosse Weekend
Washington hosted both the University of Florida and the University of Oregon last weekend in typical Seattle pre-spring weather, losts of rain, wind and cold. The Huskies were hoping to put the ice on Flordia, to get even for last year's loss to the Gators in Gainesville and were hoping to clip the Ducks from flying out with a win. Unfortunately, both the Gators and the Ducks left Seattle with wins over the Huskies, putting the chill on the Dawgs, including two season crippling injuries.
Huskies Fall to the Gators, 10 - 7
Under blustery skies and chilly, wet conditions, the Huskies took on the Florida Gators for their second MCLA matchup since the Dawgs traveled to Florida last year. Hoping to avenge that loss, the Dawgs started a little slow, letting Florida score the first goal but then charging back strong, with three goals in the first period. Rem Baumann was the first to score for UW, hitting a solo shot at 8:44 to time the game, then the John Linari/Chris Brown machine scored twice, with John scoring two goals on two assists from Chris Brown.
The Gators came right back in the second, scoring twice to even things up, but Brody Lundquist scored his first collegiate goal, assisted by Eliot Adams, to put the Huskies back in the lead, 4 - 3 at the end of the second quarter.
The third quarter was back and forth action, with the Gators drawing first blood with less than a minute gone to tie up the score again. Then the Huskies responded, with another goal by John Linari, this time an unassisted score, to take the Huskies up 5 - 4. The Gators fought back, scoring another goal at 8:25 to even things up once again, but Chris Brown answered for the Dawgs at 7:16 with a solo shot to move the Huskies up 6-5 to close out the third quarter.
Drawing on some inner strength, the Gators put on a scoring show to start of the last quarter, finding the net four times in 8 1/2 minutes to take a 9 - 6 lead over Washington. Finally, at 6:06, the Linari/Brown machine came to life again, with John Linari scoring on the feeder from Chris Brown to get the Huskies back in the game, down by only two at 9 - 7. Minutes later, the Linari/Brown machine suffered a huge setback, with John Linari going down with a torn ACL and a partially torn meniscus. John's injuries will put him out for the season; a huge blow to the Huskies,as John has dominated at the faceoff, winning 12 faceoffs and scooping up 14 ground balls in this game alone.
The Gators found the back of the net one more time, sealing the win for Florida, 10 - 7 over the Huskies.
